To prevent spit-up from soiling clothes they act like a bib as the top wraps gently around baby’s neck with adjustable Velcro.  However, they are flannel burp cloths so they absorb and function just like a flat burp cloth too. 

In the toddler phase, the pocket sits below the highchair tray or table so it doesn't swing forward into the food and swing back onto their clothes.  They also catch food so the floors and seat stay clean.  They easily wash and dry in your machine.
